5 New Ways to Beat a Weight Loss Plateau

Two women in green, one thin and one with extra weight

4 minute read

Few things are more frustrating than a weight loss plateau! To have your success suddenly halt and see the numbers on the scale stop moving is a big let down, but don’t worry, we have some ideas to get you back on track!

You’ve been working hard, and the results have been showing. But now, it seems like your progress has stalled. You’re eating right, exercising, and doing everything by the book, yet the scale isn’t budging. Welcome to the weight loss plateau—a common, frustrating reality for many on their wellness journey. But don’t worry, it’s not the end of your progress! Here are five less common ways to break through that plateau and keep pushing forward.

1. Cycle Your Calories
Eating the same number of calories every day can cause your body to adjust and hit pause on weight loss. Enter calorie cycling—an approach where you alternate your daily caloric intake. This will help keep your metabolism from becoming too used to a pattering. This prevents it from becoming overly efficient at maintaining your current weight. On some days, consume more calories (within a healthy range, of course), and on other days, scale back a bit. This fluctuation can surprise your body and kickstart the fat-burning process again.

One way to do this is to inrease your calories slightly for 2-3 days before lowering it for several days. Even this small of a change in your routine can shake up your routine and kick start your metabolism without making you feel deprived.

2. Add Resistance Training
If your routine has mostly been about cardio, it’s time to shake things up by adding resistance or strength training. Many people, especially women, shy away from lifting weights for fear of bulking up. But here’s the truth—strength training doesn’t bulk you up at all; it tightens you up and helps you build lean muscle. This muscle burns more calories at rest.

Muscles also take up less space than fat, so even if the scale doesn’t show dramatic changes, your clothes will start fitting better. Plus, resistance training can help target those stubborn areas where fat seems to linger.

3. Focus on Sleep Quality
Sleep is one of the most underrated components of weight loss. If you’re logging hours at the gym but skimping on sleep, your body may be working against you. When you don’t get enough rest, your cortisol levels (a stress hormone) increase and higher cortisol can make it harder to shed fat.

Sleep also affects hunger hormones like ghrelin and leptin, which can make you feel hungrier when you’re sleep-deprived. Prioritize good sleep hygiene by setting and sticking to a regular bedtime. Limit your screen time before bed and create a simple, calm routine that you follow every night before bed. This shift could be what your body needs to start losing weight again.

4. Try Intermittent Fasting (IF)
While intermittent fasting isn’t exactly new, it’s not always the first go-to for breaking a plateau. IF involves cycles of eating and fasting. It can give your digestive system a break while encouraging your body to tap into fat stores for energy.

The most common method is the 16:8 approach—16 hours of fasting followed by an 8-hour eating window. However, there are other options, such as alternate-day fasting or the 5:2 method (five days of normal eating and two days of reduced calorie intake). The key is to find a fasting window that fits into your lifestyle without feeling overly restrictive. Many women find that once they get used to the routine, IF helps them get over stubborn weight loss plateaus without feeling deprived.

5. Stress Management Matters
Stress isn’t just mental—it can physically prevent you from losing weight. When you’re stressed, your body produces cortisol, and high cortisol levels can encourage fat storage, especially around the abdomen. Even if your diet and exercise are on point, constant stress can be a roadblock to progress.

Incorporating stress management practices that you enjoy, from yoga to meditation and deep breathing, into your routine can lower cortisol and make it easier to lose weight. You might also consider regular massages or treatments like acupuncture, which can have both physical and stress-relieving benefits.

Bonus: Cold Exposure Therapy
Cold exposure therapy, such as cold showers, ice baths, or even cryotherapy, has been becoming more popular as a way to improve fat loss and metabolic function. The theory is that exposing your body to cold temperatures stimulates brown fat (a type of fat that burns calories to generate heat). By activating brown fat, your body has to work harder to maintain its normal temperature. This effort can increase your overall calorie burn.

Incorporating cold exposure for a few minutes each day—whether through a cold shower or an ice bath—could give your metabolism a little extra push. Just be sure to ease into it and listen to your body. While it might not be for everyone, some people find it’s a surprisingly effective way to shake up a weight loss plateau.

Don’t Get Discouraged!

Hitting a weight loss plateau doesn’t mean you’ve failed—it’s just your body’s way of adjusting to all the hard work you’ve been putting in. By incorporating new strategies like calorie cycling, strength training, improving sleep quality, intermittent fasting, and managing stress, you can get past this roadblock and continue on your path toward your goals.

Sometimes, it’s the less obvious changes that can make the biggest difference. So, shake up your routine, be kind to yourself, and know that with a little patience, you’ll start seeing results again. Keep going—you’ve got this!

And if you haven’t tried Semaglutide and Tirzepatide yet, it might be time! These medications can help you break through the barriers in your way and achieve your weight loss goals once and for all!
