Don’t know how to pick the right med spa? Nervous about making the best choice for your particular situation? It doesn’t matter if you’re in Prescott, Arizona or NYC, if you aren’t sure how to narrow your options, this is for you.

Curious about visiting a med spa, but feeling unsure where to start? You’re not alone. Whether you’re interested in Botox, chemical peels, or laser treatments, it can be intimidating to take that first step, especially if you’ve never had aesthetic services before.

Choosing the right med spa is about more than just convenience or pricing. It’s about safety, trust, and feeling like your goals are truly understood. That means there is a lot riding on that first phone call!

Here’s a guide to help you evaluate your options and feel confident moving forward.

Before You Go

Statistically speaking, there were around 155 million visits to med spas in 2024, so going in for services is both common and popular. But that doesn’t really help you if you are new and nervous about what to expert. So, before you ever set foot in a med spa, it helps to do a little research. Starting with the right information can take a lot of pressure off and help you make a more comfortable, informed decision.

  • Ask friends, family, or coworkers if they’ve had a great experience somewhere. Personal referrals are often the most honest and detailed.

  • Read online reviews and testimonials. Google, Yelp, and social media can offer real insights into customer satisfaction and overall experience.

  • Visit websites and social media pages. Look for a clear explanation of services, provider bios, before-and-after photos, and treatment philosophy.

  • Follow med spas on Instagram or Facebook to get a sense of how they communicate and what kind of results they showcase.

  • Make a short list of clinics that feel warm, clean, professional, and upfront. These are the ones you’ll want to reach out to first.

This initial approach can help you narrow your options. And once you’ve narrowed down your options, here are six things to look for to help you decide.

1. Confirm the Med Spa is Medically Supervised

This is one of the most important things to check. A legitimate medical spa should be overseen by a licensed medical provider such as a physician, nurse practitioner, ND, physician assistant. Here at Prescott Medical Aesthetics, we have Dr. Harris, who has a background as a primary care physician.

This is important because in reality, treatments like Botox, dermal fillers, microneedling, and lasers are medical procedures. They should only be performed by trained, certified professionals under medical direction. A quality med spa won’t be vague about who’s doing your treatment and they will not hesitate to provide answers. They should be proud about it!  So ask about credentials and experience, and don’t feel awkward about it. Your safety comes first.

2. Look for Education, Not Just Marketing

A trustworthy med spa educates you. That means they explain how treatments work, what to expect, and whether you’re a good candidate,  not just what’s on sale that month .Look for clinics that focus on helping you understand your options. This could be through their blog, FAQ pages, social media, or simply how they talk to you during a consultation.

If a provider takes the time to talk about your goals and medical history, instead of rushing you into a service, that’s a great sign. If all they want to do is upsell you or get you to buy what is on special that month, it’s time to look for a new med spa.

3. Book a Consultation

Any reputable med spa will offer consultations before treatment. This is your chance to meet the staff, see the space, and ask questions about services. You can (and should) talk about your concerns, your goals, and your comfort level.

The provider should listen carefully, explain your options clearly, and never make you feel rushed or pressured to buy a package. If it feels like a sales pitch rather than a genuine conversation, that may not be the right fit. You should not feel pressured into the treatment or intimidated to sign up for a treatment or payment plan.

4. Assess the Med Spa Space and Staff

Pay attention to how the med spa makes you feel when you walk in. Is it clean, calm, and welcoming? Does the team greet you with professionalism and warmth? Are you treated with respect from the front desk to the treatment room?

You deserve to feel safe and cared for. An atmosphere that’s overly clinical, pushy, or disorganized can be a red flag. One that feels too lax is also concerning. Your experience should be just as professional and thoughtful as the treatments themselves.

5. Make Sure the Plan is Personalized

No two people have the same skin, goals, or concerns, so your treatment plan shouldn’t be one-size-fits-all. A quality med spa will take the time to assess your skin, ask about your health history, and make recommendations based on your specific needs.

You should walk away from your consultation with a clear understanding of what’s being recommended, why it’s right for you, and what results you can realistically expect. If they’re pushing a “standard package” without learning about you first, that’s a concern.

6. Understand the Follow-Up Process

A med spa experience shouldn’t end when you walk out the door. Before you commit to a treatment, ask what kind of aftercare is provided. Typically you’ll be told this during a description of the treatment without even asking.

You should know how to care for your skin after a procedure, what side effects are normal, and who to contact with questions. Great med spas provide clear instructions, support materials, and a way to follow up if something doesn’t feel right. This kind of attention to care is what separates average places from truly reputable ones.

Final Thoughts on Finding a Med Spa

Going to a med spa for the first time doesn’t have to be intimidating. With the right approach and a little preparation, you can find a provider that makes you feel heard, supported, and genuinely excited about your treatments.
