B12 and Why You Need More of It

4 minute read

Everyone has heard of B12 but do you know why it’s so critical to your health? And more importantly, are you sure you get enough to fully support your body’s needs? Let’s talk about it!

B12 methylcobalamin, or simply vitamin B12, is a powerhouse nutrient that your body absolutely needs to keep things running smoothly. It’s a bit of a superstar among vitamins because of its unique structure and the many important roles it plays in your health. But here’s the thing—despite how crucial it is, a lot of people don’t get enough B12. This is why you might hear about folks turning to supplements or even getting injections to boost their levels.

Today we’re going to dive into what B12 is all about, why it’s so important, where you can find it in your diet, and why some people choose injections to make sure they’re getting enough.

What Is B12?

B12, or methylcobalamin is one of the two active coenzymes forms of vitamin B12, the other being adenosylcobalamin. It’s involved in DNA synthesis, red blood cell formation, and neurological function. B12 is particularly important because it’s the form of B12 that the body can most readily use, without needing to be converted. This makes it highly efficient in performing its roles in the body.

You might also run into cyanocobalamin B12. Cyanocobalamin is synthetic and your body has to work to convert it, while methylcobalamin is naturally occurring. You’ll often see cyanocobalamin in less expensive supplements.

Why Is B12 Important?

The importance of B12 is multi-faceted. First and foremost, it’s crucial for the production of red blood cells. Without enough B12, the body cannot produce healthy red blood cells, leading to anemia, which causes fatigue, weakness, and other health issues.

B12 helps you maintain a healthy nervous system. It helps produce myelin, the protective sheath around nerves that ensures proper communication between the brain and the rest of the body. A deficiency in B12 can lead to neurological problems such as numbness, tingling, memory loss, and even severe conditions like peripheral neuropathy or cognitive impairments.

Furthermore, B12 plays a role in DNA synthesis, which is vital for the creation of new cells. This is particularly important for tissues that need to be regularly replenished, such as the skin, the  gut as well as within your blood cells.

SIgns of B12 Deficiency

If you don’t have enough B12 on a regular basis, you can develop a deficiency. Over time, this can create a range of symptoms, some of which can be quite serious. It is important to note that you should seek out medical help if you experience any troubling symptoms – it’s always better to be safe than sorry!

Fatigue and weakness: Feeling tired or weak even after a good night’s sleep.

Pale or jaundiced skin: Skin that looks unusually pale or has a slight yellow tint.

Shortness of breath and dizziness: Feeling lightheaded or out of breath, especially after mild activity.

Numbness or tingling: A “pins and needles” sensation in the hands, legs, or feet.

Difficulty walking or balance problems: Trouble with coordination or balance when walking.

Memory loss or cognitive difficulties: Problems with memory, concentration, or thinking clearly.

Mood changes: Experiencing mood swings, depression, or irritability.

Glossitis and mouth ulcers: A swollen, inflamed tongue or sores inside the mouth.

Blurred or disturbed vision: Vision problems, such as blurred or double vision.

Heart palpitations: A fast or irregular heartbeat.

Natural Sources of B12

B12 is naturally found in animal products. The richest sources include:

  • Meat: Beef, pork, and poultry are excellent sources of B12.
  • Fish and shellfish: Particularly salmon, tuna, clams, and sardines.
  • Dairy products: Milk, cheese, and yogurt provide moderate amounts of B12.
  • Eggs: Although not as rich in B12 as meat, eggs are still a good source.

B12 is not found in most plant foods. In fact, it is only found in shiitake mushrooms and some algae like chlorella and spirulina. This poses a challenge for vegetarians and vegans. Some plant-based foods are fortified with B12, such as cereals and nutritional yeast, but these are not as reliable sources as animal products.

Why Is It Hard to Get Enough B12?

Several factors make it difficult for people to get enough B12:

  1. Dietary restrictions: Vegetarians and vegans are at a higher risk of B12 deficiency because they do not consume animal products. Even with fortified foods, it is very difficult to get enough through food alone.

  2. Absorption issues: Even among those who consume enough B12, absorption can be a problem. B12 absorption is a complex process that requires stomach acid, a protein called intrinsic factor, and a healthy small intestine. Conditions like atrophic gastritis, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, or the use of certain medications can impair B12 absorption, leading to deficiency.

  3. Aging: As people age, their ability to absorb B12 decreases. This is partly due to a reduction in stomach acid production, which is necessary to release B12 from food.

  4. Genetic factors: Some people have genetic mutations that affect their ability to convert B12 into its active forms, including methylcobalamin, leading to lower levels in the body even with adequate intake.

Why B12 Injections Can Be So Helpful

Given the challenges in obtaining enough B12, especially for those at risk of deficiency, B12 injections can be incredibly beneficial. These injections bypass the digestive system, delivering the vitamin directly into the bloodstream, where it can be readily absorbed and used by the body. This method is particularly useful for those with absorption issues, as it ensures that the body gets the B12 it needs without relying on the digestive tract.

Injections can also provide a quick boost for those who are deficient, helping to alleviate symptoms like fatigue, weakness, and cognitive difficulties more rapidly than oral supplements. Regular B12 injections can be a lifeline for those who struggle to maintain adequate levels through diet alone, offering a reliable and effective solution to prevent deficiency and its associated health risks.

B12 is a vital nutrient that supports many essential functions in the body, from red blood cell formation to neurological health. While it can be found naturally in animal products, various factors can make it difficult to obtain enough B12 from diet alone. For those at risk of deficiency, B12 injections offer an effective way to ensure the body gets the B12 it needs, supporting overall health and well-being. They can also be used to simply help boost energy and improve your overall sense of wellbeing.
