How to Get Over a Weight Loss Plateau

3 Minute Read

Getting over a weight loss plateau is even harder if you aren’t sure what is causing it. These sneaky habits might be sabotaging your weight loss and keeping you from seeing weight loss success.

Let’s be honest—losing weight can feel like a rollercoaster. You might stick to your healthy eating plan, move your body regularly, and still wonder why the scale isn’t budging. You might also have periods where doing everything right feels pretty easy, followed by periods where doing it right for even a day feels impossible. It’s frustrating, right?

First off, you should know that it’s all normal. They don’t call it a “weight loss journey” for no reason! It is full of ups and downs, so everything you’re experiencing is normal. But the truth is, even small, seemingly harmless habits could be quietly sabotaging your progress. The good news? Once you identify these sneaky culprits, you can take steps to get back on track.

When we launched our medically assisted weight loss program offering Semaglutide and Tirzepatide, we had the philosophy that it was about more than just the numbers. Weight loss is about feeling confident, energetic, and comfortable in your skin. So, hitting a weight loss plateau is more than an annoyance; it can cause you to lose faith in yourself or even give up. We don’t want that, so we thought we’d talk about some sneaky habits that could be standing in between you and weight loss success!

Sneaky Habits that Slow Weight Loss

The following habits can slow or even stop weight loss. While they may seem small, it doesn’t take much to derail weight loss, especially if you have hormonal issues or other factors that make it more challenging. And as you read them, you’ll notice how easy it is to do many of them at once, so they can add up really quickly!

1. Skipping Meals

It might seem logical—skip a meal, save calories—but this can actually backfire. Skipping meals can slow your metabolism and leave you so hungry later that you overeat or make poor food choices. Instead, aim to eat balanced meals throughout the day to keep your energy up and your hunger in check.

2. Mindless Eating

Ever find yourself reaching for snacks while binge-watching your favorite show? You’re not alone. Mindless eating often leads to consuming way more than you intended, simply because you weren’t paying attention. Try savoring your meals without distractions, focusing on how your food tastes and how full you feel.

3. Relying on Liquid Calories

Lattes, sugary cocktails, and even some “healthy” smoothies can add a lot of calories to your day without leaving you feeling full. While these treats are fine occasionally, they shouldn’t replace nutrient-rich meals. Stick with water, herbal teas, or black coffee most of the time, and choose smoothies with a balance of protein, fiber, and healthy fats. And this goes for some of the protein and diet drinks on the market too! Read the nutrients before determining if they are as healthy as they claim to be!

4. Inconsistent Meal Times

Eating at odd hours or skipping meals entirely can throw your body’s hunger signals out of whack. When you’re not consistent, your metabolism and energy levels can take a hit, making it harder to stick to your weight loss plan. Try to eat meals and snacks around the same time each day to keep things steady. This can be harder when you work odd hours or have irregular shifts. Meal planning and prep can help you stay on track in these situations.

5. Neglecting Portion Control

We’ve all been there—nuts, avocado toast, or even a healthy bowl of granola can turn into calorie overload if you’re not mindful of portions. And if you’re the one that cooks meals, those taste tests also add up. So it’s easy to not really know all the calories you’re eating unless you’re really careful. Portion control doesn’t mean you have to deprive yourself, but it helps to measure out servings, use smaller plates, or simply listen to your body’s hunger cues.

6. Emotional Eating

Stress, boredom, or even a rough day can send you straight to the snack drawer. Using food as comfort is common, but it doesn’t address the emotions you’re feeling—and it can derail your weight loss efforts. Next time, try journaling, taking a walk, or doing something relaxing like a face mask instead of reaching for chips or sweets.

7. Overestimating Exercise Calories

Exercise is amazing for your body and mind, but many of us overestimate how many calories we burn in a workout. This can lead to eating more than we should, thinking we’ve “earned” it. Instead, focus on exercise as a way to build strength, reduce stress, and feel good—rather than just a calorie-burning tool.

8. Skipping Strength Training

Cardio might be your go-to for weight loss, but don’t skip strength training. Building muscle not only helps you tone up but also boosts your metabolism, so you burn more calories even while resting. Adding some weight training or bodyweight exercises to your routine can make a big difference. For women over 40, this is especially important because strength training reduces the risk of bone loss and helps with hormonal changes that make weight loss so difficult.

9. All-or-Nothing Thinking

Ever have one indulgent meal and think, “Well, I’ve blown it—might as well keep going”? We’ve all used this rationale, but this mindset is a trap! Weight loss isn’t about perfection; it’s about balance. One treat doesn’t undo all your hard work. And one slip-up doesn’t mean you have destroyed your progress! Remind yourself that every meal is a new opportunity to make a choice that supports your goals.

10. Eating Too Quickly

When life gets busy, it’s easy to scarf down meals without thinking. Unfortunately, eating too quickly can prevent your body from recognizing when it’s full, leading to overeating. Try slowing down, chewing each bite thoroughly, and enjoying your food. You might be surprised at how satisfied you feel with smaller portions.

A Gentle Reminder

At the end of the day, weight loss is about progress, not perfection. Don’t beat yourself up over slip-ups. Instead, focus on creating small, sustainable changes that help you feel your best. Whether you’re just starting out or fine-tuning your habits, remember that every step forward is a win.
