Your laser hair removal appointment in Prescott, Arizona might be the same as it would be anywhere, but our unique climate does play a role in how your skin reacts. If you live here or in a climate that is similar, you’ll want to read this before your appointment.

Laser hair removal can be life-changing, especially if you have thicker hair and are tired of constant shaving, but success depends on more than just showing up for your appointment. The climate you live in impacts your skin and that means you have to take into account things like humidity and sunlight.

We live in Prescott, Arizona and in our high-desert climate, things like sun exposure, hydration, and timing play a big role in getting the best results. Here’s everything you need to know to prepare and recover like a pro, with tips tailored to Arizona’s unique environment.

How should I prepare for laser hair removal in Prescott?

First, let’s remember that laser hair removal isn’t suitable for some skin and hair types. So make sure you go to a trusted provider that is skilled in laser hair removal. Once you have your consultation and are told that you are a great candidate, here are some steps you’ll want to take before your appointment:

  • Avoid sun exposure for at least 2 weeks before treatment. Even a mild tan can increase your risk of burns or hyperpigmentation. That’s especially important in Arizona, where UV levels stay high even in winter. So if it is fall or winter, or a cloudy day, you are still exposed.
  • Shave the area 24 hours before your session unless told otherwise. Don’t wax or tweeze! Laser targets the hair root, which must be present.
  • Skip active skincare like retinoids or exfoliants for a few days prior. These can make skin more sensitive, especially if you are prone to dry skin or have generally sensitive skin. Pamper your skin during this timeframe!
  • Stay hydrated. Prescott’s dry climate can lead to dehydrated skin and it happens quickly and easily.  If your skin is dehydrated, it may react more strongly to the laser. Drink water and use a basic moisturizer in the days leading up to your visit, just remember to follow all of the guidelines you’ve been given for the time leading up to your appointment.

What should I expect during the session?

The laser targets pigment in the hair follicle, which is why it’s most effective on darker hair and lighter skin. Treatments feel like quick snaps with a rubber band, and most sessions take 15 to 60 minutes depending on the area. You’ll wear protective goggles, and your technician may apply a cooling gel.

Don’t be nervous though, it is a comfortable procedure that will give you back a lot of time and provides a great deal of convenience, especially in the swimsuit season!

What’s the best time of year to start?

Fall and winter are ideal since it’s easier to avoid sun exposure. That gives your skin time to heal between sessions. Many Prescott patients start treatment in late fall to be hair-free by spring. That doesn’t mean you can’t get laser hair removal at other times of the year of course, it just means you will have to be more mindful of things like sun exposure and hydration, so don’t be put off from making an appointment due to the season.

How should I care for my skin after laser hair removal?

It is important to carefully follow all of the aftercare instructions you are given! Here are some common tips for taking care of your sensitive skin post-laser hair removal.

  • Apply aloe vera or a gentle moisturizer to soothe the area. Ask your provider what they recommend.
  • Avoid hot showers, saunas, and workouts for 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Stay out of the sun for at least a week and always wear SPF 30 or higher on exposed skin. We recommend mineral sunscreens with zinc oxide for extra protection, especially in Prescott’s high elevation.
  • Don’t pick or scratch. Itching or minor redness is normal. Resist the urge to exfoliate or irritate the skin.

How many sessions will I need?

Most patients need 6 to 8 sessions, spaced 4 to 6 weeks apart. Hair grows in cycles, and the laser is only effective during the active growth phase. You may also need an annual touch-up. Your consultation should provide you with a good idea what schedule would be best for you.

Can laser hair removal be combined with other treatments?

Yes. Many clients combine laser hair removal with treatments like chemical peels, Botox or CoolPeel. It depends on the areas you are treating and your ultimate goals. Just be sure to space out your appointments and let your provider know what else you want so they can plan appropriately.

For more details about pairing treatments, check out our article on How to Tell if a Chemical Peel’s Right for You.

Is laser hair removal safe for all skin tones?

Modern lasers can treat a wider range of skin tones safely, but some lasers work better than others depending on your complexion. At Prescott Medical Aesthetics, we are experts and use FDA-approved devices and tailor treatment based on your skin type, hair color, and goals. During your consultation we will let you know if a treatment is appropriate and if it isn’t, we’ll help you explore your options.

Final thoughts
