Which is better, Botox or Xeomin?

Women getting botox between eyes

4 minute read

Should you get Botox or Xeomin to fight those lines and wrinkles? There are several factors to consider, from how quickly they kick in to how long they typically last. Read on to learn all about it.

If you’re looking for a way to soften expression lines or prevent new wrinkles from forming, chances are you’ve come across a few injectable options—namely Botox and Xeomin. Both are FDA-approved, both use the same active ingredient, and both deliver noticeable results. So what’s the difference? And more importantly, how do you know which one is right for you?

First, we want to say that neither is “better” than the other. People have preferences, and some products work better for some people than others. However, while the treatments are similar there are some meaningful differences in how they’re formulated and how they perform. Choosing between them is ultimately a personal decision, but your provider’s experience and your unique goals should guide the process.

Here’s what you need to know when comparing Xeomin to Botox, and why one might be a better fit for you.

What Botox and Xeomin Have in Common

Botox and Xeomin are both neuromodulators made from botulinum toxin type A. They work by temporarily blocking the nerve signals that cause facial muscles to contract. This helps relax wrinkles caused by repeated movements like frowning, squinting, or raising your eyebrows.

They’re both commonly used to treat forehead lines, crow’s feet, and glabellar lines (the “11s” between the brows). The procedure is quick, typically under 15 minutes, and involves minimal downtime. Most people begin to see results within a few days, with full effects typically developing in about one to two weeks.

Both products also wear off over time, usually lasting around three to four months. How long your results last can depend on factors like your metabolism, the dosage, the treatment area, and how often you’ve had injections in the past.

Key Differences in Formulation

The biggest technical difference between Xeomin and Botox lies in their formulation. Botox contains a complex of protective proteins that surround the active botulinum toxin. These accessory proteins have been part of Botox’s formulation since it was first approved in the late 1980s.

Xeomin, on the other hand, is referred to as a “naked” or “pure” form of botulinum toxin because it contains no accessory proteins. just the active ingredient. Some claim this makes Xeomin less likely to trigger an immune response, which could theoretically reduce the risk of developing resistance to the treatment over time.

However, resistance to Botox is extremely rare, especially in typical aesthetic doses. For the vast majority of patients, the accessory proteins in Botox do not pose any problems or reduce effectiveness.

Onset and Duration: How They Perform

Another consideration when comparing Botox and Xeomin is how quickly they work and how long the results last. Botox tends to show results within three to five days. Xeomin’s onset may be slightly slower, with results sometimes taking up to a full week to appear.

When it comes to longevity, both products are similar but not identical. Most patients experience three to four months of results from either treatment. That said, some find that Botox offers slightly longer-lasting effects, particularly in areas with more movement, like the forehead.

Consistency is another factor to consider. Botox has a longer track record and a well-established dosing curve. That means providers can often predict your results with greater accuracy, especially after a few sessions. Xeomin is newer to the market and may require more trial and error to get optimal outcomes in some patients.

Patient Experience and Brand Confidence

Botox is the most widely recognized neuromodulator on the market. It has been used in aesthetic medicine for over 20 years and has a high level of trust among both providers and patients. Its consistency and predictability are key reasons why many practices and individuals choose to stay with Botox.

Xeomin has gained popularity in recent years, particularly among patients seeking a simpler, more stripped-down formulation. Some appreciate the idea of using a product with fewer ingredients, while others explore Xeomin after using Botox for many years.

Still, many patients who try both return to Botox for its smoother onset, slightly longer duration, and the confidence that comes with its long-standing history in the aesthetic space.

Why Your Provider’s Recommendation Matters

Even though patients may have preferences based on personal experience or research, the most important voice in the decision should be your provider’s. A skilled injector understands the nuances of each product and how they interact with different muscle patterns, facial structures, and aesthetic goals.

In some cases, your provider may recommend one product over another based on how your body metabolizes neuromodulators, how long you’ve been using them, or your desired results. They may also choose a product based on how it performs in specific facial areas or how predictable your previous treatments have been.

Choosing the right product isn’t just about the label, it’s about the results, and the person guiding your care.

Final Thoughts

While both Xeomin and Botox can effectively reduce wrinkles and prevent signs of aging, the right choice comes down to your provider’s expertise and your personal preferences. There are subtle but important differences in how each product is formulated and how it performs, and those differences may matter more for some patients than others.
